Actress Danai Gurira is the latest addition to the cast of the highly anticipated Black Panther which is scheduled for a 2018 release. The announcement was made at the 2016 San Diego Comic Con where a group photograph of Ryan Coogler, Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o and Danai Gurira immediately went viral. Director Ava Duvernay was originally approached to take the helm directing the film, but her vision was not quite aligned with the studio’s. Many are eager to see what Coogler brings to the table after successfully resurrecting the Rocky franchise with Creed.
Coogler is joined by Creed and Fruitvale Station collaborator Michael B. Jordan, while the female cast members just wrapped a successful turn on Broadway with the award winning play Eclipsed – written by Danai Gurira and starring Lupita Nyong’o. They are now set to star as Okoye and Nakia respectively, members of the Dora Milaje, the Black Panther’s deadliest bodyguards. (By the way, if you want a taste of how fierce these women are, let me remind you of Florence Kasumba who stole the show and “broke the internet” with her fierce performance as a bodyguard in Captain America: Civil War). Michael B. Jordan will star as the villain Erik Killmonger while Boseman of course will play the title character.
